The number of bits gives information about the encryption strength. The higher the number of bits, the stronger the encryption.

If you want to crack a 128 bit encryption code, you have to enter 128 digits in exactly the right order. This may sound trivial, but the following example shows how complex this code is structured at the end.

with 2 digits there are 4 possibilities (00, 01, 10, 11),
with 3 digits there are already 8 possibilities (000, 001, 010, 011, 100, 101, 110, 111)
and with 4 digits even 16 possibilities (0000, 0001, 0010, 0011, 0100, 0101, 0110, 0111, 1000, 1001, 1010, 1011, 1100, 1101, 1110, 1111).

It can be concluded:

at 32 bit there are  4*10^9 possibilities,
at 64 bit 1*10^19
and at 128 bit there are possibilities 3*10^38.

Since the current state of the art for SSL certificates is now 256 bits and thus grants you even higher encryption, we recommend that you select SSL certificates with at least 256 bits encryption.
